He rolls the dice, his fingers nimble and his palm steady, sure as ever what they would land on. There’s a man next to him, one with a square jaw and pointy nose, who is concealing a gun in his boot. The sharp, sly-looking woman sitting across from him has a knife tucked into the hem of her skirt. Around the table, there are several others, each with varying degrees of arms, each with their fingers on triggers and their eyes on games.

The boy in front of her is wearing a very crooked grin, and she just knows he’s selling some sort of lie before he even speaks.

Characters: Jewel, Skoochy, Blaze
Themes: Children, Friendship, Family, Loss, Fire
Jewel stared at the fire pit and waited for Skoochy like she always did, crouching in the abandoned silk mill that all the homeless children hid in. Today the fire burned more brightly, the flames crackling close to her face. She ran a hand over her eyes and exhaled, her shoulders falling.
“Hey Blaze, mind if you calm it down a bit?” Jewel suggested.
“Ain’t me making the fire this angry,” the older teen rasped. “The wood’s just dry.”
Jewel curled her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on them. In front of her, the fire crawled along the edges of the wood and stretched toward the beams lining the ceiling. A rustle from the curtain that acted as a makeshift door caused her to look over her shoulder. Skoochy trudged to the fire and stood over it, the water from his limp hair dripping onto the floor.
“I was out tryna get food, right,” Skoochy pulled the cap off his head and wrung it out over the pit. “And this storekeeper just starts yellin’ at me. He waved his arms like this,” he flapped his wrists frantically. “And he wouldn’t stop till I got outta there.” Skoochy kicked one of the stones lining the fire. “You woulda thought somebody lit a flame under his ass.”
“Fire can kill you.” Jewel stated.
Skoochy squeezed the last of the water from his cap and slapped it back on his head. “’Course it can. What makes you say that?”
Jewel curled her toes. “We rely on fire for life, but it can kill us just as easily as save us.”
Blaze slinked out of the shadowy corner with a scowl on her face. “Now, why you gotta be thinkin’ ‘bout that?”
Jewel ran her hand over one of the flames and felt the sting of it on her hand. Recoiling, she sighed and hugged her knees. “Momma died in a fire.”
A silence hung between the three forgotten children, weighing them down like their wet clothes. Skoochy shifted and took his cap off again, running a hand through his hair. Blaze took a few steps back and let out a long breath.
“You wanna talk ‘bout it?” Skoochy asked, holding his cap across his torso.
“I used to dance you know. Momma said that it would help my bending.”
“You never told us you was a bender,” Blaze interjected.
“I can waterbend some.” Jewel adjusted herself to sit with her legs crossed. “I was at practice that day. I came home and took a nap because I was tired, even though Momma told me not to. When I woke up, my world was on fire.”
“Does it scare you when we light fires?” Skoochy asked.
“No.”
“Why not?”
Jewel looked up from the fire to stare at Skoochy. “Because everything’s still burning.”

Crime and Punishment- Jinoochy
He is innocent, but only she knows he’s innocent.
Skoochy is cunning, intelligent, and quick-witted. Basically, he’s everything a criminal should be- it makes sense to call him out as the main suspect.
But, even if it makes sense, that doesn’t mean he did it.
Jinora sighs, slouching in her chair, knees bumping her desk as she stretches. The moonlight highlights the edges of several pieces of evidence, the text taunting her in her restless haze.
Groaning, she straightens up and tackles the reports again- no one ever said this case was going to be easy, but she is determined to clear his name.

Goodbyes are bittersweet.
Skoochy has said goodbye to many people in the most unconventional ways- he briefly remembers pools of blood and rasping promises, cringing when he sees the dying eyes of way too many friends.
Looking at her orbs- bright, intelligent, and alive- he’s very glad this is not the case.
It’s just as sad, though.

She’s not supposed to feel this way.
Of course not- it’s a definite statement. A rule. A law. She’s not supposed to feel this way. That much is clear.
And, yet, as she wanders the dark alleys, searching for signs of movement, signs of life- just a sign that he’s been there- she realizes her heart is beating faster than usual, and not from fear.

He’s never liked the streets of Republic City.
Well, he’s never liked the streets of Republic City at night. In the afternoon, he’s fine with them- in fact, the hustle and bustle is ever pickpocket’s paradise. The square is never threatening in the light of day, save for a few Metalbending cops who think that they need to help the city by getting rid of kids like Skoochy. But, they aren’t that much trouble, though- they’re too idiotic to catch a dumb monkey-weasel, let alone a group of thieves.
So, the streets of the Republic City are nice during the day.
It’s the ghosts that come out at night that bother him.

This feeling is… foreign.
Jinora has read many books detailing love- she knows basically every scenario ever, has heard countless tales of passion and tragedy alike, and understands nearly all the ‘symptoms’ of the emotion.
But, it doesn’t mean she’s ready for it.
