Days on the compound got long and tedious, so Korra constantly pestered him to just let her outside, Howl because she was just going a little way’s onto the ice.
He knew his job was on the line when he opened those gates, but her face when she saw that snow always made his doubt disappear.
The Waterbending-powered snowballs he received as payment, however, weren’t nearly as satisfying.

To say he was relieved when he saw her was an understatement.
When Howl had been tasked with the duty of guarding the Avatar, he was eager to do his part to bring balance to the world. He was a top-notch Firebender, and one of the best swordsmen of his Guard class. Many of his comrades poked fun at him, telling him that he should step down and give the others a chance. He would joke back, informing them that they had to practice more to be as good as him one day.
Some of the more speculative- and cruel- senior guards questioned his intentions. He would often hear jealous whispers as he walked through the dojo. Many of the older men had horrid trains of thought.
“Seen that one- she’s a beauty. The kid’s probably looking for a new toy.”
“You joking? It’s the power he’s looking for.”
“I think it’s the money- the Avatar must have lots of money…”
It irked him that his teachers, and even some of his peers, thought so lowly of him to accuse him of such, but Howl had a clear set of morals and standards- he didn’t care for the mindless chatter of Envy’s green eye.
Howl knew what he wanted- he wanted to play a big roll. He wanted to be a hero.
Summary: She didn’t want to leave him, but she had to.

“Go. We’ll hold them off.”
She couldn’t afford to stop- she knew that. She was an asset to this war; If she was captured, it was over.
Still, she couldn’t help sparing him a glance as she ran. His shoulders were drawn back and he stood tall as the Equalists surrounded him and his comrades. It was a change from how she usually saw him- he was usually just her goofy friend. Right now, though, he was serious.
His hand went to his sword and she looked away.
“Howl,” She mumbled as she hopped on Naga. “You better be safe.”
